Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Makerere University youth chapter members are reported arrested just a week after the election. According to FDC officials, the chapter chairman and other members were today rounded up from Makerere University.
Today’s arrest is a continuation of arrests across the country, the party officials say. Police arrested other party members in Jinja, and Nakawa and some other areas.
The arrests follow calls by the party president Kizza Besigye and other opposition leader’s call to Ugandans to reject President Museveni’s victory.
The FDC leader together with other opposition party leaders have called the previous election that Museveni swept with a 68 percent win a sham and demanded that fresh election take place under a new electoral commission.
The leaders say that Museveni’s victory is illegitimate as it was aided by a partisan electoral commission and massive electoral malpractices. However, the government continues to caution the opposition.
For instance, President Museveni yesterday while celebrating the NRM party’s victory at Kololo airstrip in Kampala vowed to deal with the opposition. Museveni said he had spent an entire decade defending this country and would not fail to protect his 5.4 million votes. He threatened to munch the opposition like ‘samosa.’
Efforts to contact the police on why the youth were arrested were futile as the phone numbers could not go through. However according to FDC the police has remained non-committal on why these people are being arrested.
